Having been very successful with obtaining funding for our allotment site from various organisations, I thought that it would be good to give something back to the community. Knowing that Daggs Allotments at Thornbury are open every year to raise money for charity under the National Gardens Scheme I contacted the NGS county team organiser.
Two ladies from the NGS came to look at our allotment site and I am pleased to say that we meet their high standards to be eligible to open under this scheme. I have registered our details which will be published in their 'Yellow Book' for next years openings. Nearly 4000 gardens open every year in England and Wales under this scheme supporting the following charities:-
• Macmillan Cancer Support
• Marie Curie Cancer Care
• Help the Hospices
• Crossroads Care
• National Trust Gardening Careership
• Queen's Nursing Institute
• Perennial/Royal Gardeners' Fund for children
• Chelsea Physic Garden Trainee
• Arthritis Research UK
• ABF - The Soldiers Charity
• NGS Elspeth Thompson Bursary Fund
The total money spread over these charities for 2011 was £2,600.000.
We will open on Sunday 19th August and Sunday 2nd september 2012. We will charge £3-50 entrance fee for adults from the public and sale light refreshments, plants and excess produce, with all proceeds going to the NGS charities. So please put these dates in your diaries as it would be good to have as many plot holders on hand on these days to answer questions and to help with the refreshments and workshops planned for any visiting children.

On Sunday 14th August Patchway Pretoria Road Allotment Association held an open day supporting National Allotment Week. The National Allotments Gardens Trust calls on all allotment sites in the UK to open their gates to the public to share the benefits of allotment gardening, which are:-
+ Healthy exercise
+ Good company
+ Quality, fresh and affordable fruit and veg
+ Reduced food miles and carbon footprint
+ Bio-diverse environment
+ Wildlife haven
This was our first year of taking part and it was a very successful event raising over £200 for the allotment funds. The event was well supported and the children in particular enjoyed the workshops. The workshops consisted of bird box, butterfly house making and stone painting. The children also enjoyed painting their bird boxes in many psychedelic colours. Whether the birds will be put off by the brightness of the boxes is another matter that only time will tell! Thank you to all who helped at the event and supported it.

National Allotment Week
As part of National Allotment week which is from 8th August - 14th August the allotment site will be open to the public on Sunday 14th August. This is a chance to celebrate and promote all that is good about the great British institution of Allotment gardening and to show off our hard work.
There will be workshops for children, BBQ, cakes and produce for sale and a raffle. We are looking for volunteers to help out with the day which is from 12 until 4pm. We are particularly looking for a couple of men who could make bird boxes with the children. We have some wood which has kindly been donated.
Donations of cakes would also be most welcome. Please let me know if you can help out in any way.
Thanks, Jenny
A big thank you to everyone who helped out and supported our allotment open day on Saturday 9th July, which once again was a great success.
We made a profit of £232.88. A big thank you to all the children (and the parents) who took the time to make scarecrows. It was fun to see them popping up over the allotment days before the open day. Competition was fierce and judging was difficult! The winner was the 2nd Patchway Scout group with Jorden a close second. The Scout group are going to put the money towards an abseiling day.
I also want to thank everyone for being generous with their tea and coffee donations. To date I have banked £41.56. It is great to see so many people making use of the meeting room, taking time out from their digging and planting to enjoy a drink with fellow plot holders. We are all getting to know one another and it now feels like we are a community.
